Facebook “Like” and Twitter “Retweet” Buttons for WordPress.COM Blogs

When developing the code for the Facebook “Like” and the Twitter “Retweet” buttons, the developers forgot about us WordPress.COM users as well as other bloggers and certain other sites.  Their code does not work for us, however I have found a code that does work for each!

Twitter “Retweet” Button (see example on top right corner of this page):

After much searching, this is the only code I’ve found that works.  Paste this code into your individual blog posts or into your pages, or into a widget, in order to have the same Twitter button as I do.  Make sure to replace the section saying YOUR_TWITTER_NAME_GOES _HERE with the name of your Twitter account, i.e. http://twitter.com/easy2usesites.  Do not delete the quotes, as this is part of the code.  The button works perfectly, only one drawback is that you can’t move it, no matter where you put it, it likes to sit to the right.  However, it is better than nothing and looks pretty great up there in my opinion.  A big thank you for this information to Mirella McCracken’s Blog.

Facebook “Like” Button (see example after first paragraph):

After even more searching, I found the code for this Facebook button. It isn’t ideal as it goes to a white page asking you to click on the “Like” button there (although this is the only way to prevent WordPress.COM from thinking that your button is a security risk)… but if users do click “Like” there, it registers it on the homepages of their friends, which will still get you the traffic you’re wanting.  (If you want to see what I mean, click the “Like” button here see how it works.)

It also has an option for the person to write a comment about the page they’re liking, which looks awesome and is great advertising.  For example, I “liked” one of my articles on this blog and entered in “I’d recommend reading this article if you are thinking about getting a website!” and clicked “post” and it came out like this:

The codes are there, but do not just add the codes to your page, it is a little more complex than that – read what she writes and you will have a Facebook “Like” button!
